Dr Westera was born and raised in regional Queensland, completing his medical degree in one of the first cohorts to graduate from James Cook University.
During his urology speciality training in Queensland, Dr Westera developed a keen interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He was selected to complete a robotic and laparoscopic fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Robotic Surgery Unit at Greenslopes Hospital. After completing his Urology Fellowship in Australia, he was selected to complete an ERUS accredited fellowship at the Bristol Urological Institute in the United Kingdom in Uro-oncology and Robotic surgery. As a result, he is currently one of a few urologists in Queensland to be able to offer minimally invasive/Robotic surgery for most urological cancers including radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical nephroureterectomy and radical cystectomy with intra-corporeal urinary diversion. He is recognised as an official proctor for robotic surgery in Australia, mentoring established Urologists starting out in Robotics.
On returning to Australia, Dr Westera worked as a Consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and The Wesley Hospital before deciding to move to the Gold Coast/Northern NSW. He is dedicated to offering a high-quality General Urology service to this area. He also is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Tweed and Murwillumbah Hospitals mentoring the next generation of Urologists and junior doctors.
